Notes:   29-05-07
After we finished with B177 we continued with B178.
When we started digging this basket we thought that it consisted of very hard dark brownish white soil. But soon we realised that the very hard soil was only a very thin surface of two parts of the surface of the Basket, and that in the rest of the Basket the soil was a little softer. The Basket went very deep and it continued over the whole surface that is framed by the walls of the pit. It presented small differences concerning its soil color and its inclusions, but because these differences were minor, or because they where not consistent in a single area but scattered in the several parts of the basket, and because it was obvious that they were caused by the single throwing of different material in the pit, we decided to excavate this area as a single basket until we reach a layer that will be obviously different.
In the South-western part of B178 there were some very large fragments of tiles (one of them a fragmentary pan tile) with some reddish soil in some parts underneath them that we decided to remove in B178, because the reddish soil was not spread in all the surface underneath and between the tiles, and because the white soil of the Basket continued between these tiles as well.
The inclusions of this basket were mainly tile fragments (most seem to have been manufactured from bright yellow clay) in the beginning of the Basket. The fragmentary tiles continued in all basket areas, but as we went deeper the amount of stones (angular, sub-rounded and rounded large boulders, cobbles and pebbles) increased. There were carbon pieces and charcoal in B178. In areas lying deeper in B178 we noticed small quantities of ashes scattered in the soil. Lots of bones were also found. The quantity of pottery sherds is not as great as was in the previous baskets of the pit fill.
A fragmentary block with a rectangular depression (basin?) was also discovered [max.pr.L = 0.265m / max.pr.W.= 0.20 m / max.pr.H. = 0.175m / max. pr.H. of depression = 0.095 m]
We also discovered a bronze flat object and we collected a large piece of carbon.
The Eastern and southern walls of the pit do not seem very solid but they consist of very soft soil. The western limit of the pit is NS wall at 266.44E. In the western part of the Northern limit of the pit some reddish soil came to light.
We could not finish the basket today, so we will continue tomorrow with the same basket.
30-05-07
We continued with B178 for another day. As we dug deeper the soil became a little more brown. The basket included also today many large stones, pottery and bones.
We decided to stop excavating this pit, even though we did not finish with it and continue it in another season. In the center of the bottom of B178 there is hard soil with patches of white scattered in it, whereas around this hard soil, along the edges of the pit there is very soft soil.
It is possible that this pit was a well filled with waste, but this will be determined in a following excavation period.
