Stratum: | Inclusions: fine pebbles to cobbles, more of the latter than seen in contexts to date, mostly angular, both tabular and spherical
Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | This soil is looser and darker with larger stone inclusions than the material to the S. However, if it is a foundation trench, then it would be at the corner of two walls. Yet there is no sign of a foundation trench meeting this context in the NE corner, so we may be dealing with a robbing trench. The soil reached is harder, with fewer inclusions. If this is a foundation or robbing trench it may be related/equivalent to 5138 and 5140, contexts from last season lying about 3m to the W. However, 5140 (top elev. 85.68, bottom 85.59) had smaller stones and ashes, while 5138 was actually hard compact leveling fill. The trench cuts in a little to the N underneath W26. One of the stones revealed here in the N is a red-pink rock similar to stones appearing in the trench revealed to the W in 5140 & 5138. The pit to the W cuts 5208 (excavated in 2007) but didn't reach a bottom elevation as low as that of the current context. Thus we are pursuing the context to the W across the pit as a different context, 5210.
