Date:   2009/04/02
Stratum:   5% pebbles to cobbles, subrounded
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the W. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   Excavation of 5951, apparently a levelling fill below the pebble/cement floor, came down on two distinct deposits: to the N, a hard compact deposit with some larger stones and a moderate amount of pottery and to the S an area of softer, less compact soil with a smaller percentage of stones and pottery.
We designated the softer area 5953, which appears to be a robbing trench for a wall visible in section form the cut of the pit to the E.
On 6 April 2009 we continued excavating the fill fo the robbing trench after completing the removal of the foundations of the adjacent western pier. We traced the limits of the robbing trench further east and somewhat further wes, into the next suite of room excavated to a lower level in the 1960s. At the east end, there are several large limestone blocks still in place, with 2 courses visible, extending to the limits of the large pit.
